Wrapping Up Mesopotamia

This Week:

We wrapped up our stations Monday, December 14. Some students striving for excellence, still needed to put some finishing touches on their work asked if they could work on this from home or during Study Hall.  These grades have already begun to appear in parent portal.

Up-Coming Events:

QUIZ
Students have received and gone over the study guide. B-Day groups will have their quiz on Friday December 18, A-Day groups on Monday, December 21.  I pushed this back a day since I was out on Tuesday, and I wanted to go over the guide with students.

FINAL POSTER ACTIVITY
Students have begun work on their posters!  Mrs. Spoer, who co-teaches with me introduced a tic-tac-toe model for the students to select topics for their posters. This can be seen in Google Classroom and this will be collected on December 23

Vogel's Corner:

IS THERE A TIME FOR EXTRA HELP?
When possible, the fifth grade staff has made our rooms available to students looking for an opportunity to work on assignments during our shared lunch period. Students can find Mr. Vogel in his room on most B days.

December 11, 2015

Update:

For those of you who are unaware, I sustained a serious injury to my hand which took me out of the classroom.  Now that I am back I am excited to be working with your children and helping them to discover new learning opportunities.  As a way to have you more aware of the weekly events that take place in my classroom, you can look forward to seeing this newsletter every Friday.  This newsletter will cover what happened the previous week, and give you a preview as to what you can look forward to in the upcoming week.

Last Week:

Students will be working at four stations:

  • Reading and Writing Station - Students will be reading from clay tablets and translating the words into the English Language.
  • Laws Station - Students will use present day issues and apply the Code of Hammurabi to determine what the punishment would have been.

  • Mapping Station - Students will identify key geographic features of the Middle East
  • Technology Station - Students will create a slide presentation on different types of inventions, mathematical concepts, chemistry, and astronomy.

Next Week:

Students will be preparing for a quiz on Thursday/Friday December depending on what day they have social studies.  Students will receive a study guide on Monday or Tuesday to help them prepare for the quiz.

They will also be involved in a culminating activity where they create a poster where they bring together all four pieces from the stations they learned about last week.  Students will be allowed to choose one of the four stations they have done research on as the focus of a writing assignment.

Tech Tip:

Google Classroom:  As we have moved to the Chromebook, student work has shifted from a paper version to to a blended version of paper and computer based work.  As parents you can always check your students work on Google Classroom by logging onto Google Classroom from any machine.  All students need are their username and password.  If you would like to learn more about how Google Classroom works please watch the video below.
