April 22,2016

This week: In keeping with the hands on - minds philosophy, students have been self directed and on task as they continued to monitor and record the progress of their mummification experiments.

Students are excited to be mummifying their oranges. Now they  are  getting grossed out or goofed out with some of their observations!

When all the data is in, students will have to summarize their experiment and make their conclusions about Mummification.
Some of our mummified oranges may not make it to the afterlife : (             Those unworthy will be devoured by the goddess Ammut  known as the devourer of souls.

Students have begun making a Time line poster about this period.

Last week:  Students have been researching mummification. Slide presentations started last week on Mummification are due Monday for A groups, and Tuesday for B groups. (I placed a slideshow self check up on Google Classroom
Students are responsible for their own presentation, however, they are encouraged to collaborate with one another.  It is great to see students helping one another, solving problems, and sharing discoveries.

This week:  Students were excited to begin mummifying their oranges. Working individually and collaborating with a team, students had to prepare, measure, and perform observations of their individual mummy.

Pictured are students using the triple beam scale to measure the initial weight of their mummified oranges. Over the next days we will be weighing and making observations of their mummy's progress. When all the data is in, students will have to summarize their experiment and make their conclusions about Mummification.

Students are expanding their understanding about some of the Egyptian gods and goddesses involved in the mummification process and the afterlife.

Up-Coming Events
Next Week students will be learning about some great Pharaohs of Egypt.

This week:  Students completed and turned in their completed posters!  Below are some pictures of their work.  Wednesday and Thursday students completed a Research Simulation Task which asks the students to decide if it is OK to remove historical objects from other countries. We discussed the movie "The Monuments Men"  which was about an American military unit sent out to recover, protect and return artwork stolen by Adolph Hitler's forces.

Students thought this was an interesting topic to write about
